The Septimus Heap Series

Septimus Heap is a series of seven books featuring a protagonist of the same name. The series follows the adventures of Septimus Heap who, as a seventh son of a seventh son, has magical powers. After he becomes the apprentice of the ExtraOrdinary Wizard, Marcia Overstrand, he starts his studies for seven years and a day to become an Ordinary Wizard (or maybe an ExtraOrdinary?).
His adventures take place in a fictional world full of secrets and mysteries, a world where rats are messengers and can speak, a world where spells are common and where the dark forces are trying to penetrate. MAGYK, FLYTE, PHYSIK, QUESTE, SYREN, DARKE and FYRE are telling his and his friends’ adeventures in this magykal world.
The books are published in the United States by Katherine Tegen Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers, in Canada by HarperCollins Canada, and in the United Kingdom by Bloomsbury Publishing.
The illustrations are realized by the amazing Mark Zug, who also worked on the companion book of the series, THE MAGYKAL PAPERS.

    when I finished reading fyre I was so depressed. I hate happy endings(I`m not goth, its just that when you read a series for a long time you get attached to the charecters, and knowing you`ll never read about them again is depressing. At least with a cliff ending you know theres more to come.)

    I love these books. I do not own a copy of them, but I go to my school’s library to get one of them to read. My librarian only has the first 5 but she says when I get up to the 5th book, she will get the last 2. My friend and my librarian both got me to read the first book and now I love them so much!!!!!!!!!!!

    The Septimus Heap’s books are the best ! I was in love with Harry Potter’s book but my parents says “Try something new” and I have try… Now I can’t imagine don’t read Magyk (this is the French title) !!! I have read three or four time all of the books (but I havn’t got Fyre 😥 ) and all of time, it was SO COOL! Thanks very much!!!!
    I have just a question, in the third book, you have write than Jenna Heap have meet Jenna Crackle and she gave to her a potion of a lot of Magyk for the dragon boat. But I have never read than she used it. I have never read Fyre and I don’t know if you write that in this book (in France, they have say than they will not translate Fyre 😥 I’m so sad).

    So, here’s my Septimus Heap story: When I was in fourth grade I read Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. I fell madly in love. I read both of those series one after another on repeat for at least a year, possibly two. Then in 6th or seventh grade I realized that one cannot actually live on these two series alone. So I started looking for a new series. So one day my brother (I think he was like 9 at the time) comes up to me and shows me this book called Magyk. He was really enthusiastic about the series, and I guess I was kind of interested. He said, “it’s amazing. It’s better than Harry Potter.” My immediate response to this was “youtraitornothingisbetterthanHarryPotter.” I turned my back on the series. Then a couple months later one of my closest friends read it. She is not at all a book person, and she said it was really good. That made me interested enough to pick it up off the shelf. But that is not even the end of my shameful abandonment of Septimus Heap. I loved Magyk, but I was only able to get through the first chapter of Flyte. I’m ashamed to say it, but it bored me. I left Septimus’s world for that of Middle Earth. Finally over Columbus day weekend (yes this Columbus day weekend) I had some free time and came to the conclusion that if there is a 7 book series is taking up space on your shelf, you’ve really got to read it. I got through the beginning of Flyte (who’s proud of me) and found that the ending was actually very good. Long story short, in the past week I have not eaten, slept, or done any homework. This series is now a permanent member of my top 5: Sep, Harry Potter, LOTR, Percy Jackson, and Betsy-Tacy, which are all equal on the scale of fabulous books. Anyway, I’m now a HUGE fan. Marcia Overstrand is life.

    I LOVE these book, I have the whole series including Magykal Papers and The DARKE Toad. Every night when I can’t fall asleep, I just replay my favorite parts of the series in my head. (And sometimes I make up my own)
    And I was wondering, are you ever going to come to Indiana? Also, I saw that one of the characters last name is Sarnn…….and one of the Ring Wizard’s last name is Saarn……..
    Of course they’re spelled differently, but I was wondering if that character it’s the Ring Wizard’s son?
    I didn’t find these books, but my best friend suggested them and I never got it…..but she begged me to read them and I got the books, read them, and LOVED THEM!
    I couldn’t stop reading them, I missed dinner once, snuck one at night to read, and I couldn’t stop! This is how much I love your books. Please answer soon……..

    2.i have a few questions like in fyre it says alther went down into the chamber of fyre invthe last few chapters but he never went to the chamber of fyre
    I want to know more about drummins and i think- no offense to angie but- the way how the todhuntermoon series was spun-off was pretty bad.i almost skipped that part so i reread the book and found the would have been better if it was-for example- a girl who lived in the ramblings and saw sep always going there and back and always had wanted to become a wizard.
    I think you should make another book or e-book- but if it is an ebook make it in paper too-that explains every little story that you do not completely explain for example:counter-feet,the queens rules….
    One question that drives me crazy:how is the hole story take place in the year 12,004 and how are there moving chambers/elevators.was there a world catastrophe and only people and animals is there magyk and what is that “law” in the end of fyre please answer

    I would like to Inform you,If you are not Already aware of this,that you my dear are nothing short of *Amazing*.I have read All of the Septimus Heap series in the time of a Full week,I’ve read one book a day,because once you are engaged in this book,you want to stay there.I like your humor that was mentioned in the descriptions,and the constant flow of events,even the connections between all the characters.There was always constant action,and adventure, and for that i praise you.

    I do however have a few complaints about your book, and i would love if they were taken into consideration for future works.1) How come there was -only- 500-700 pages,I was always left wanting more,and a big grin on my face.2)Why oh why were they so few,I dreaded the moment I would read the last page of Fyre,because I wanted to grow more with septimus in the castle,and I wanted to know what happened to the ghost that fell asleep on the chair and was later woken by Queen Jenna’s child.

    Sorry for writing what seems like an essay on this blog,but I could go on about septimus heap and write a week more,the world you’ve created is nothing short of spectacular,and you are nothing short of ‘Awsome’

      The Darke Toad fits between Magyk and Flyte, although as it was written much later you don’t really have to read it in that place.

      Zoe just because it needs a chimney doesnt mean it is a nuclear reactor. You are pretty much saying that because you have a chimney in your house for your fireplace your fire place is a nuclear reactor
      The fyre has a couldron and reactors dont they have so,ething else and why would themwhole castle love nuclear waste then.
      I guess alchemists are nuclear scientists then too

    Hi Angie!

    I just wanted to tell you how amazing the world of Septimus Heap is and how much I love it!
    Also, about the movie, I’m not asking for a part or anything, but simply asking if the casting can be made as close to the characters in the book, please?
    Kind of like the casting for Harry Potter, how every person seemed to have just walked out of the book.
    I really don’t want to see something awful happen, like with Percy Jackson, where the children were supposed to be 13 and 14, and they ended up being played by 17 year olds.

    What Septimus Heap character would you be?

    If I were a character in Septimus Heap series I think that I would be Jenna Heap because I have dark brown wavy/curly hair Jenna had dark hair and according to the pictures it was wavy/curly, my skin is fair like Jenna’s, My facial features resemble that of the novels description and are a mix of her illustrations. My behavior is also like Jenna’s because although like most people I am loving and caring at heart, I can sometimes be very stubborn. But I still love my family dearly and would do anything for them.

      That’s true it does. I think Angie Sage was trying to make Beetle seem as though he was better friends with Septimus… and a perfect match for Jenna. Beetle was written to be 3 years older than Septimus and Foxy around two years older than Beetle which shifts Foxy’s age and Beetle’s age. But luckily it wasn’t only in fire that Angie Sage changed Beetle’s age; it was in one of the earlier novels.

    I have Fyre and have read it and really enjoyed it but one thing that annoyed me was that I couldn’t get the same style of cover I previously had. I have the ones displayed on here for books 2-5 (I lost Magyk when moving house and never purchased Darke just borrowed it from the library) and the cover for Fyre is way different from the others and I don’t like it 😦

    I love Magyk! I read the whole series! I drew an ironically awesome picture of Merrin and an even awesomer one of Septimus. I don’t know how I did it. I was lying in my bed reading Syren for the 4th time, and I got out a clipboard with paper on it and a pencil and I drew disturbingly realistic pictures of the characters. Maybe it was Magyk that was making me do it. 🙂

    I’m annoyed with the fact that the UK edition cover is not like the original covers. I bought the rest of them before the covers changed and now on Amazon, they are listing Fyre with the new covers. I feel annoyed because Magyk was the first book I ever bought with my own money and I can’t wait to read Fyre, so the thing with the covers is a big dissapointment.     i am the ‘librarian’ in my friendship group, this means my friends just nick my septimus heap books. my school librarian saw Angie Sage recently and she brought me back a book mark!
    last year our school did a campaign of advertising a book, or a series, i (obviously) did the best books in the world. for a month our school computer background was all the books. the sheer excellence of the books caused a waiting list in our library.
    i love septimus heap, my books are all tattered and well loved.

I am aching to read the next, so I imagine it as a tooth about to fall out, when it falls out another one starts to get wobbly.     Iv’e been reading you books since I was eleven. I’m thirteen now. I was reading the comments from two years ago (I get that bored) and I noticed a women who had said that she was said that there were only going to be seven books and not 49. I know you would’nt be able to right 49 books. I can barely manage one. I love your books. I mean it’s not even abut reading anymore. It’s about staying up till early hours on school nights, a flashlight in hand, under a blanket, just so your mom doesn’t take your book away. Iv’e read all of your books, exept for fyre of course, but I always wonder at the magical ways of Septimus Heap, family and friends (and enemies). I am currently working on a book. I havn’t named it yet because even though I know the whole plot of it, I don’t know if I’ll keep the plot at a specific pace throughout the whole book. I wish I could be as good a writer as you. My mom says if I try, I can accomplish it, but I know even if I could get a New York times best seller award ( when I live in south carolina) I probobally would’t be able to come up with as good a book as your series. I shouldn’t write to long of a letter, it’d take you to long a time to read and I have to get ready for church.

  109. Rediscovering Septimus

    Wow, I had totally forgotten how great this series of books actually is. I’m from Sweden so we just got Darke published here, but when i started to read it i realized how much I had forgotten from the earlier books, so I decided to read the little notes on most of the characters that are in the end of every book, thought i would help. Well, from the moment I got Magyk down from my bookshelf I couldn’t help but just read the first chapter, and the second, and the third, and… (Well, you get the picture).

    After a while I had read book 1-5 once again, and it was then that I realized what a brilliant author you actually are. When Magyk first was published here in Sweden (2007) i was only about 11-12 years old, and I didn’t really know a good book when I read it. I loved the stories about Septimus Heap, but when I read them now I discover all the sub-plots and I put it all together and see the huge universe that you created, with such lovely characters and a wonderful language. Yes, your “imaginary” (sorry, couldn’t find a better word, after all, I’m not english speaking :P) words even shine through in the translation, even though words like Magyk are spelled correctly, like Magic (Magi, in swedish), it’s so wonderful, and I’m enjoying everey minute of it! Also, I found The Magykal Papers (Which I thought wasn’t available in Sweden) in a small book shop the other day, I was so happy 😀

    Now as I’m going to read Darke I’m already looking forward to Fyre, but it’s sad that it will all end after that. It’s funny, because when Magyk came out, I thought that this was going to be a trilogy, so i was surprised by the ending of Physik, it couldn’t end like that. But then Queste came. And when I thought Queste was the last book, then came Syren (My favourite one so far, it’s truly great). So, what I’m trying to say is that this seemed as a series of books that didn’t have an ending at all, it just continued on and on and I loved it. So it’s sad that we now are so close to the ending of this serie that, along with Harry Potter, is a huge part of my childhood.

    Well, this make me wonder, when you’re done with Septimus, do you have any plans on another book that would appeal to all the Septimus readers? It would be great!

    Also, I read about plans for a movie, since I see that this page isn’t always so updated I wonder, how far is it now?

    I’m hoping for a really great time reading Darke for the first time!

    I think that the Septimus Heap book series is the best! I first found out about while looking for a thick book at the library, then found Magyk. I tried it out, and it was the BEST book I had read in a good while. Even my siblings want to try it out because of how good the series is!

    I think Inkheart and Harry Potter are okay but I hate Twilight and Hunger Games was pretty good but to realistic for my taste though the movie was actually mostly on the book, give me SH any day. The Magykal place totally draws you in. Actually people call me a book addict so I think Twillight is the only book so far that made want to stop on the first page! I actually started SH Magyk at 7:15 in the morning that unresistable after only the first chapter in fact by the time I left for school (I wasn’t late) I was on chapter 4!

    I hated the first book at first. Just frown it to the end of my book shelf and forgot about it for about 2 years. This september I read it, only in a week. I just loved it. At the end of the week I went to the shop and bought the next 3 books. Just finished syren few days ago. It’s brilliant! I love the way it’s very orginal and diffrent from other series.
    But I would never compare it to Harry Potter, please, they are completly diffrent. It’s just foolish. Both series are amasing.
    Can’t say I’m looking forward for the movie, after I’ve seen the Harry Potter example. “Fans” of the actors and popularity just ruin the whole series, I didn’t read Harry Potter until this summer because of that. But the music in films is wonderful.
    Just hope Septimus Heap won’t fail. Waiting for Fyre to come out!

    You are an amazing writer. From the moment I began reading Magyc,I was captivated by your writing style. You include so much detail that I felt like I was in the world. The storyline also enchanted me and I had an extremely hard time putting the books down. One unique thing that I loved was the extra information at the end of the books, either explaining what happened to certain characters in the past or continuing their story in the future.
    I`m looking forward to reading the seventh book, and perhaps I`ll reread the previous books again 🙂 I also suggest the series to anyone looking for a good read.
    As an aspiring writer myself, you are a major inspiration to me. Whenever I read this series I always want to grab a pen and write with one hand while still reading the book in the other

    I’m an adult reader of the SH books and just wanted to let Angie know how much I love them; it’s not just kids who are huge fans, though I’m sure she knows this. I fully agree with the above writer about movies that don’t do the book justice. How will a movie ever be able to capture the wonderful internal dialogue of characters such as Maxie and Spitfyre that really make the books so wonderful? Can’t wait for the seventh book and any possible spin-offs; hopefully there will be one about Lucy Gringe and Wolfboy!

    • If you love HP soooooo much that you say it on A Septimus Heap BLOG that HP is better, even though anybody who has a brain knows that SH is waay better. There is no happy go lucky in SH where as in HP its all HAPPY GO LUCKY. If I had to bet who’d win in a Magyk contest Sep would win all to easy. I love these books and Have read them since the beginning (buying the first one the day it came out on a whim) but I can’t understand how everyone is saying that they are better books than harry potter? For one, HP had an over-arching plot that had EXTENSIVE foreshadowing and depth from book one. The SH series is Fantastic, well written, fun, and entertaining, but it does not trump HP in terms of being better, or more well written. Both are good, but HP simply has more depth and a stronger plot line, not to mention characters that feel more real (though that may be possible because it takes place in the modern world, and in England and not a fictional England) Still, Angie, I love your work, I hope you keep Warner Brothers in line so that they don’t murder your work, but I wanted my opinion out there 🙂

    I bought Darke the day it came out and I finished it in about four hours! It was amazing! I’m a VERY picky reader and if I aren’t interested in the first twenty pages I drop the book. But when I first read Magyk I knew that I wouldn’t ever drop any of the Sep Heap books. All of my friends think I’m crazy (which I probably am! 🙂 ) but I just can’t stop talking about it! Darke was the best one yet! DARKE IS MY LIGHT! 🙂
    P.S. To all the ppl who think that Sep and Syrah should end up together, there’s one problem: Sep is 14 and Syrah is 521 so that’s a HUGE age difference. Just wanted to point that out.

    Umm… I love your books, I love Septimus Heap… and I’ve read all of the books five times… now I begin to read them again.
    You saved my boring days when you wrote these books.
    I’m thinking in my mind the scenes, and I was surprised when I saw for the first time Jenna and Septimus, and the others pictures… they looked just as I thought they would! 😀 (THATS because here we have MAGYK only in paperpack, and there isn’t any pictures).
    My little sister also likes the books. I read MAGYK to her one night, and she wants to read it herself now. Unfortunately, my friends just go somewhere, even if I say something that begins with the letter S, and if the next is E… I’m sad about it… :'< (someday I think that they are like Dursley's from Harry Potter…) Weeelll, maybe it's because I've talked to them about it soooo much… mayde they can put the blame on me…? 😀
    BUT I'm sooooo excited about the movie! I reeaaallllyyyy hope that Warner. Bros. succeeds… I believe that they will.. (hope so!) I do NOT forgive them if they ruin this movie somahow!
    Hmm… it's really fantastic to be able to chat with the author… fortunately I found this web page. 🙂

    It’s kind of irrelevant, but I don’t feel hate for Simon or Merrin. I mean, ok Simon is just soooo jealus of Septimus and that’s why he did all that stuff. Imagine someone taking away all you ‘ve been dreaming of all your life… It can drive you crazy.
    And just consider all that Merrin has been through. He was raised by DomDaniel, never really had a mother, almost everyone calls him stupid… All that anger… How can a child live with this? I sometimes feel sorry for Merrin…

    I think I can understand them in some way.

    The same scenario (sort of) that happened to Lucy, happened to me (Lucy above that POSTED).

    I love Warriors. But the book kind of became repetitive, and started going downhill after a while. Boring, so to speak.

    I read the Septimus Heap Series up to Queste (Syren had not come out yet), and then I got bored.

    BUT, I picked it up again, and read Syren, hearing there was going to be a movie. And I have decided that Septimus Heap is now my OFS (official favorite series). Sorry, I like abbreviations. 🙂

    I read Magyk so much after hearing there was going to be a movie, that I almost know it by heart. It’s kind of weird. I read it approximately 30 times. The other books, maybe about 15-20.

    I think Septimus Heap was my first ever fantasy book, and thats what got me into it. Ever since I read the first one (About 5 or 4 years ago) its been tucked away in my mind and heart, and I’ve always remembered it. Once Flyte came out, I remember thinking “Ohh that book!” and getting it immediately. Or, as soon as I could. It was really funny, cause I hung around with a guy named harry, who looks like harry potter, and I have curly blond hair and green eyes, so I look like Sep, or the brothers, so we were like the wizards in town. I’m really excited for Darke to come out, I hope its good like the others have been. I’m pretty excited for the movie, too.

    I’m one of your many adult fans, and I’ve just finished re-reading books 1-4 and savoring Syren for the first time. I wondered, since you live in Cornwall, if you are fond of Winston Graham’s Poldark novels? Seeing two of your characters named “Demelza” and “Morwenna” made me smile, since those are two important characters in the Poldark series–I wondered if it was a gentle homage? Please keep up the good work with Septimus Heap. My only complaint is that seven books is NOT ENOUGH! Only two left??? I am so enjoying them, I wish there were going to be more…If it must be a magykal number, how about 49 books instead of 7?

      I haven’t read Poldark, but Morwenna and Demelza are such Cornish names (and my car is called Demelza too…) that i had to use them.
      SO glad you like Sep such a lot. not sure that i could manage 49 books tho…

        Oh thanks for the reply! Well, if you haven’t read the Poldark novels, then you are in for a big treat some day. (Historical fiction, set in the late 1700s-early 1800s.)

        I loved Darke, especially since Simon is handily my favorite character. I was so surprised by how conclusively it ended; I was expecting a cliffhanger ending, and was so pleased that you didn’t give us one. Now I am truly mystified as to the possible themes and content of the final book…and still wishing it could go on indefinitely.

        May I also add that I love your postscripts and additional notes about the minor characters; they are such fun!

    every one is going on about how many pets they have. I thought i would join in to. I have 3 cats fat be, zoe, and cupcake. 3 dogs ciqala, aleu, and ali. 2 budgies dinky and boomer. 2 chickens buzz lightyear, and woody. 1 turtle george. and some fish. I’m getting another cat, 2 raccoons and my brothers dog rusty on friday. and yes all these pets live in my house including the 2 chickens. so i’m never lonely with all these friends around. I also have 2 cows blondeau and panda with 2 calves night and red at a farm i go to all the time where my cat baby smoke lives. The only thing i’m missing is a dragon, i would love to be a dragon rider.

    Septimus Heap is THE BEST series. EVER. In my list of favorite book series, it’s very close to Warriors, but considering how I feel that Warriors is going a bit down hill after the end of bk #18, Sunrise, I’d have to say I like Septimus heap better. I’m so glad I found out about them. It started when a friend of mine was reading Magyk, and told me a bit about them. later, I didn’t have anything to read so I picked up a copy at my school’s library. Instantly I couldn’t put it down, and right after I finished I called my dad from school just to have him pick up a copy of Flyte at the bookstore(the library’s copy was checked out). I finished them faster then my friend and she hasn’t even read syren yet. I absolutely can’t wait for Darke.

    So, my question is: Is there anything you can tell us about Darke? Anything?

  256. I have two favorite series of books I love which is Septimus Heap and A Series Of Unfortunate Events. But I like Sep alot. I almost started crying because I can imagine thing that happen in books in my mind so in Syren when Syrah said that Spit Fyre was dying it broke my heart.         Angie, I’m very excited for this move…HOWEVER if turns out like the Series of Unfortunate Events or Percy Jackson and The Olympians movie (which COMPLETELY messed up the plot… missing several characters and scenes)turned out… I don’t know how I would handle it. These books are amazing and if they did something minor like Aunt Zelda’s character not having blue eyes… it wouldn’t matter to me. But if they mess with this plot and maim this movie like some others I’ve seen…!!! So do you know if it will mostly be based on the book? And when I say mostly I mean MOSTLY.

        Yup. I’m gonna cry if this turns into one of those butchered movies that totally revert from the storyline and ruin everything. Like they did with Percy Jackson, or The Last Airbender, for instance. PLEASE MS. SAGE OH PLEASE WILL YOU PREVENT THEM FROM BUTCHERING YOUR WONDERFUL SERIES!!!??? I would love to have it in the epic awesomeness of the Disney rennassaince… or however you spell it. What I mean is, if the movie could have the grand splendor of movies such as The Lion King and Aladdin, I would literally build a shrine to Septimus. Yes, it’s true. I would. I heard this would be an animated film, so, obviously, I’m very excited. Which is why i typed this much. Ahem…I’m going to leave now. 🙂

  259. It’s official. After reading all the S.H. books multiple times, have pronounced them to be the best books I’ve ever read. S.H. is one of those books you wish will have sequel after sequel after sequel. I LOVE THESE NOVELS!

      OMG Septimus Heap is my all time fave! I read the first 4 when I was in like 4th grade, maybe? Anyway, I was so disappointed that there was no other books. Then I went to the library (finally) in the summer that I was going to 9th grade and as I was about to leave, I browsed the children’s section (not that I’m saying it’s only for kids) and I saw the series. I touched the books and I started smiling, and then I saw there was number 5! I am majorly obsessed with Septimus now, and my sisters all know about him because I quiz them on the books, like, every morning and night. Septimus Heap rules!

    I Would Say that anyone and everyone should read this book! It has captivated my entire life. I have read many books and in doing so have discovered that this book is probrably one of the best books ever written even exceeding the ahrry potter books! This Book makes you want to jump inside and live there in the magykal surroundings!
    I want to say thank you to you Angie for filling my life with enjoyment after my life took a rather painful turn. And that Angie is why you are my hero and I am, forever greatful to you.
